Busking July 4th Weekend
We'll be out a couple times this weekend. Tomorrow for First Friday and then again Saturday Morning for the Farmers' Market. After being off for most of June, it feels really good to be able to get out and busk again. There is something about the simplicity of playing outside, no microphones, no stage, just on the street corner in the sun (or preferably the shade).
It hurts me a little bit when we get a gorgeous Saturday and I'm not out busking for at least part of it. I'm always tempted to go out by myself, but I've tried that in the past and it never seems to go over as well as when the whole band goes out. I've theorized that when busking alone, people probably think that the lone busker is crazy or some vagabond. 2 people doesn't get much better. Then you're just a crazy guy with a friend, a friend that is also potentially crazy. When you get to 3 people, then it starts to turn the corner. 3 people and you have to be at least a little organized. And what are the chances that you're going to find 3 or more crazy people that are all in agreement (I feel like there should be a joke about caucuses about now). 3 seems to be the minimum for successful busking. When you start getting into 3, 4 or 5 people you're probably not dealing with crazy people or if you are, at this point it is a cult. A singing, dancing cult. And historically our society has been pretty receptive of cults as long as singing and dancing are involved.
I think that's all for tonight. This busker needs some sleep before braving the 90 degree heat tomorrow. Hope to see you at First Friday
